My "Different" Experience at ONU Social Media Workshop

One thing about me is that I’m not a big fan of long conferences or seminars but when I have to go for a part of my grade I will be there being present. This recent seminar I was not present or attentive to anything going on to be fully honest. The reason why I wasn’t really focused was due to the time of the seminar. If people know me they would know I'm not a morning person so having to be at an event at 9:30 am definitely a number on my body in terms of my energy. But one of the more basic reasons why I didn’t feel that I was locked in on the seminar was because it had nothing to do with anything I was looking to study. Even though I picked a class for social media it was technically a fill in course because I’m a finance major so this class is really far from what I’m looking to gain with my degree. But even though I didn’t enjoy it that much I at least can talk about some of the things I heard during the seminar.

To start off my day I listened to our keynote speaker Jason Therrien who was the first keynote speaker we had for the event who didn’t graduate from Ohio Northern University. His talk was interesting for me because he got the crowd involved even though people were tired due to the early start. He also talked about the truth about the future trends going out in the world of social media. After that I can’t really tell you about much else because I wasn’t actually listening to what was going on but some of the session I went to was about topics like, Skills to quickly improve your social media presence, how to properly use AI (artificial intelligence) in social media without abusing it, and make meaningful impacts within your social media career. There was one that stuck out to me at the end of the event and it was actually from an alumni of the university who currently works with Abercrombie and fitch’s social media team. The reason why this one stuck out to me was that it came from someone who was in the same position I was in and also that they work at a brand that I am actually familiar with unlike the other speakers.

Chapter 7: Marketing with Snapchat

In chapter 7 we moved on to talking about another popular social media app mainly catered to young adults, Snapchat. With its unique features and a user base of over 300 million daily active users Snapchat stands out as a powerful tool for brands to connect with potential customers in creative ways. Here’s how you can leverage Snapchat’s unique tools to boost your brand’s presence and engage effectively with your audience. One of Snapchat’s most powerful features is its geofilters. These location-based filters allow businesses to create branded content that users can apply when they are in a specific geographic area. Whether you’re hosting an event, opening a new store, or running a local promotion, geofilters are a fun and creative way to increase brand visibility and engage with people in real-time. Users will share their snaps with your branded filter, creating organic exposure for your business and encouraging others to discover your brand. Snapchat’s sponsored lenses provide a u...

Class Reflection

As the semester comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting a lot on the social media class I took this spring. When I first signed up, I thought it would be mostly about posting on Instagram and maybe learning some marketing buzzwords. I had no idea how deep we’d actually go and how much it would change the way I think about what we see online every day. One of the biggest takeaways from the class was realizing how strategic social media really is. Behind every post, there’s planning, scheduling, audience analysis, and usually a purpose, whether that’s to promote, inform, or entertain. We learned about algorithms, analytics, branding, and even crisis management. It made me look at platforms like TikTok and Twitter (X) completely differently. What once seemed random or casual is often the result of calculated choices made by people who know exactly what they’re doing. The most eye opening part of the class, though, was running a blog site. I thought it would be simple to write a few p...

Social Media Marketing with YouTube

This week we learned about social media marketing with YouTube. YouTube isn’t just a video-sharing platform—it’s a powerful engine for social media marketing and brand building. With over 2 billion logged-in users monthly, YouTube offers a massive audience. But what makes it truly effective for marketers is how its algorithm and advertising features work together to amplify your brand’s reach and engagement. At the heart of YouTube’s marketing potential lies its algorithm. Designed to keep users watching, the algorithm prioritizes videos based on watch history, engagement, relevance, and video quality. This means that if you create content that resonates with your target audience, YouTube will do the heavy lifting—recommending your videos to more viewers who are likely to engage. Consistency, keywords, and compelling thumbnails play a critical role in catching the algorithm’s attention. By optimizing your titles, descriptions, and tags with relevant keywords, you increase your vi...
